- Complications Relating to Accuracy of Reduction of Intertrochanteric Fractures Treated with a Compressive Hip ScrewPublication . Guerra Pinto, F; Dantas, P; Moreira, R; Mamede, R; Amaral, LIntertrochanteric fracture is the most frequent type of fracture in the proximal femur and the compressive hip screw is one of the most popular methods of treatment. The reduction criteria for this type of fracture are ill-defined. The purpose of this study was to validate 3 reduction criteria: displacement, alignment in the anteroposterior and in the lateral plane. We reviewed a cohort of 430 intertrochanteric fractures treated with a compression hip screw. The type of fracture, quality of reduction and technical complications were noted. We observed a relationship between accuracy of reduction and the incidence of complications, even among fractures of the same severity. A displacement bigger than 4mm and failure to accomplish correct alignment (a neck-shaft angle over 125 masculine and less than 20 degrees angulation on the lateral view) was considered a poor reduction and was associated with more complications.
- A Rare Case of En Bloc Endometrium SheddingPublication . Mamede, R; Costa, C; Djokovic, DThe human endometrium is a unique tissue capable of repeated degradation, loss and self-repair in response to fluctuating levels of sex steroids, in a tightly regulated process. It takes place hundreds of times in a woman’s lifetime, manifesting as vaginal expulsion of blood mixed with cellular debris for a period of several days. The aim of this work is to present a case of en bloc endometrial desquamation in a teenage patient using combined oral contraception. Several mechanisms are proposed, although further studies are needed to better understand this extremely rare phenomenon.
- Sustained Increase of Paediatric Invasive Streptococcus Pyogenes Infections Dominated by M1UK and Diverse Emm12 isolates, Portugal, September 2022 to May 2023Publication . Gouveia, C; Bajanca-Lavado, MP; Mamede, R; Araújo Carvalho, A; Rodrigues, F; Melo-Cristino, J; Ramirez, M; Friães, Aince autumn 2022, observed numbers of paediatric invasive group A Streptococcus infections in Portugal (n = 89) were higher than in pre-COVID-19 seasons. Between September 2022 and May 2023, the dominant diagnoses were pneumonia (25/79), mostly with empyema (20/25), and sepsis (22/79). A number of cases required admission to intensive care (27/79) and surgery (35/79), and the case fatality rate was 5.1% (4/79). Genomic sequencing (n = 55) revealed multiple genetic lineages, dominated by the M1UK sublineage (26/55) and more diverse emm12 isolates (12/55).
